For her GPP Street Team's Crusade 52, Michelle Ward posed the question: when the season changes, do the colors on your art palette change, as well?
This is an intriguing question for me, as I LOVE color, and have this perception of myself as being a COLORFUL painter (beader/clay artist/photographer/baker/story-maker-upper).
But, is my self-perception accurate?! And... if it's true that I AM in love with color, am I in love with many colors, or an unchanging palette of favorites?
One thing I love about Michelle's challenges is that she takes us out of our complacent zone with the questions she asks. She doesn't simply show, which is a marvelous teaching method, but she also asks. An open question can do a lot to initiate the kind of search that can lead us to being better artists.
Which is why I think being nosy is a good thing to be. Thank you, Michelle, for being nosy!
Well, if you MUST know... I thought I was an equal-opportunity color lover. But apparently, I like these colors
blues
pinks
yellows
greens
much more than I like these colors
browns (one canvas)
purples (one board)
reds (one wc paper)
black (no photo available)
As for seasons, of the colors I do love, I seem to be unmoved by seasonal considerations.
What?! I live in L.A. and I don't care about seasons?!? Not So, People! I love me some rain, some thunder, some clouds, some frost on the lawn, some flowers of yellow and pink and foliage of greens and yellow and birds who don't poop on my car and people who remember to turn at the proper intersection, instead of stopping in the middle and making an illegal u-turn, thus stopping the flow of traffic and endangering the lives of cross-walkers.
What I'm saying is: I love seasons! I just, for some reason, use whatever color I want to use whenever I want, whether I'm hot or cold.
Blue:
April
August
Pink
February
May
Yellow
March
July
Green
March
December
It's a whim! It's whimsical! I'm filled with color whimsy!!
so.
The remaining question is: Exactly WHY am I afraid of browns, purples, reds and blacks?
...hmmmm......???
Next Up: Chris works on Crusade 53 using only greys, grey-whites, off-greys, grey-blacks, and off-black greys. Which cuts down the naming options quite a bit.

Looking forward to those "other" colours. I think my pallet does change. I've never really examined it, but I shall pay closer attention.
ReplyDeleteI like all colors at all times (even pale ones!) but I consiously use seasonal ones too......I think ;)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely have favorite colors. I notice this most in the art I buy. Reading your blog has given me a idea for a new painting :-) Thank you (& Michelle)
ReplyDeleteWow you've inspired an Emmy painting. color me impressed! See what I did there?

I like seeing so much of your work here! I was just thinking about my favorite colors to use in my work...I've been attracted to blues a lot more lately, but orange still wins the day right now. Love your blog banner!!
ReplyDeleteYou people are the salt of the earth.
ReplyDeleteI think that must be a good thing, because I hear it a lot. Is it because salt is rare in the earth? I think it must be plentiful because it's kind of inexpensive. Maybe when they say you're the salt of the earth, it means you have flavor? I'm not sure. I know you guys are not the dirt part of the earth because you a fabulous. Maybe I should have just said you guys are fabulous? But that's so unspecific.
Frankly, I'm sorry I said anything.
Well, you are fabulous too!! I love the question here, and the way you are SO rebellious!!! You would brighten any heart in February, but I love your yellows the best. I hope your august is really lovely. roxanne

ReplyDeleteChris - I'm happy you took the time to investigate your own color choices regardless of the weather, and I'm even happier to see you interpreted the challenge as an observation of how we operate. Interesting to learn what we favor and what we shy away from when it comes to color. I appreciate your extensive illustration to make your statement. Thanks for sharing with the team!
ReplyDeleteLove December! Come on, bet you can do brown if you try ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy personal reasoning behind not liking browns and blacks is that, simple as it sounds, they are just too dark.
ReplyDeleteA deep blue or green can be rich but black is just darkness.
As for brown, I am not so sure because brown appears in nature lots and can be a truely amazing colour to use.
But I guess it comes down to personal taste :)
Great post, specially the number of images to get your point across.

They look lovely
